Brief sketch: New Judge Gary Gilman

Judge Gary Gilman is the newly elected Judge for the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County, Pennsylvania. Judge Gilman will be handling almost all family law cases for 2012.

Court Procedure

Motions Court has been completely revamped. Judge Gilman will hold Motions each morning at 9:15 a.m., Tuesday - Friday. Also, all motions (contested or uncontested) must now be sent to the court by noon of the day before presentation.

Background

He attended Washington & Jefferson as an undegraduate and obtained his law degree from American University (in DC) in 1987. Judge Gilman began his legal career by clerking for Judge Thomas Terputac. He became a Washington County solicitor in 1989 and opened a private law practice in 1994.

Judge Gilman began working as an Allegheny County "Hearing Officer" in 2000. A "Hearing Officer" tries support cases that have not been resolved at the support conference. Judge Gilman also worked as an Allegheny County "Master", a type of quasi-judge that tries divorce and alimony cases and support cases. He ruled on over 8000 cases in those 11 years.

He was recently elected to the Washington County Court of Common Pleas with about 54% of the vote, after having received the most "recommended" rankings from the Washington County Bar. Judge Gilman is taking the seat formerly held by Judge Mascara, who passed away.

Personal

Gary Gilman is married to Katherine Emery - also a Washington County Judge in the Court of Common Pleas. However, However, county judges handles cases independently, unlike appeals court judges who hear cases in a panel. He has a son that attends Canon-McMillan High School. Judge Gilman currently resides in North Strabane. He is a founder and treasurer of the Friends of Canonsburg Town park, a food deliverer for the Canonsburg-Houston Food Bank and was recently solicitor for the Canonsburg Zoning Hearing Board.
